Wait for Stable Ice

ice-thicknessAlberta has experienced a mild November. Nobody has really been complaining about the warm weather conditions, however, this time of year and mild conditions can be very difficult on Alberta anglers. The boat has been put away and shoreline anglers are having trouble casting to open water. There’s still some great river fishing opportunities but for the most part, anglers are anxious to get on the ice for a day of ice fishing. However, mild weather conditions means unstable ice conditions which can land an ice angler in cold water.
The two biggest dangers with ice fishing is falling on the ice and injuring yourself and falling through the ice. There are many factors that affect ice conditions but as a rule I follow the chart at right.
It’s safer to wait and go ice fishing another day than to venture out on unstable ice conditions.
